Why Fall is the best time to vacation in Hochatown and Broken Bow.

The ending of summer and the months of September through November highlight my favorite time of year in Hochatown and Broken Bow. There are many reasons why this time of year is so special in McCurtain County and below are some of the fall activities that I enjoy year after year.

Cooler Weather - I live in North Texas and believe me when I say August can be a beatdown with the seemingly never ending heat. August is also hot in Broken Bow and Hochatown, but always about 10 degrees cooler than our home on North Texas and the nights are substantially cooler. Then enter September where the averages drop out of the 90's and into the 80' for almost perfect days to spend on the river. Evenings drop into the 60's and set up well for time at the firepit. October you drop into average weather in the 70's daytime and 50's at night. November it starts to really cool down with middle 60's in the daytime and low 40's at night.

Fall Foliage - The colors range from green to orange to deep reds and even purple. The fall foliage is quite a site and makes for some amazing pictures. Of course cleaning up the leaves as they fall off the trees is not fun, but leave that to us as cabin owners and you just enjoy.

Wildlife - Wildlife is abundant year round in McCurtain county. It seems to me the deer population is more active in the fall. It is very common to see deer in the creek right behind our cabins each morning. I love to sit on my back deck at the Sugar Shack cabin and enjoy my coffee while watching them graze and get a drink of water.

Fishing - There is not doubt the trout in the river like the colder weather. Fishing can become very challenging in the heat of the summer month. The fall brings the cooler mornings and very often you can catch your limit in just an hour or two. Beavers Bend State Park offers so many great fishing holes for the experienced fly fisherman in the red zones or traditional bait and tackle in the blue zones. Pictured is my daughter Kailey. She has had some memorable days on the Mountain Fork River in Beavers Bend State Park. There are also many guides who can help yu navigate the river or Broken Bow Lake.

Hiking - Hiking in the area is fantastic year round in the area, but the fall and spring are my favorites for the cool weather and changing of the foliage. The fall brings the amazing colors as leave change colors and fall off the trees. The spring is where everything comes back to life with every shade of green you can imagine. Anyway, Beavers Bend State park boasts the best hiking trails. See our blog post on hiking trails to find the best ones for you and your skill level.

Less Crowded - If you have visited the last couple years during peak summer months, you know how popular McCurtain County is getting. On weekends every cabin is full and there are people everywhere. The restaurants are full, the river is full, tours are full, hiking trails are busy and there is a line a mile long on Sundays on 259 to exit Hochatown. The fall brings a calming effect to the area as kids go back to school and summer vacations are completed. Weekday trips are ideal and peaceful and the area returns to the quiet and tranquil setting I fell in love with so many years ago.

I hope I have convinced you that the fall is the perfect time for a getaway. We have three great cabins on our property available for weekday or weekend adventures. We can accommodate groups up to 15 across the three adjacent cabins. Give us a call or check availability at www.hibernationhollowcabins.com.
